MAZE featuring Frankie Beverly: Live in Los Angeles

There is no way a soul DVD collection can be complete without cataloging the legendary Frankie Beverly and Maze.  The mere mention of Frankie Beverly is enough to bring instant smiles to the lips of many of all ages, along with a knowing nod of approval.  Often times in response someone will immediately break out with their favorite Frankie vocal rendition of “Happy Feeling” they heard at one of the many Maze concerts they attended over the years.  And if you’ve attended one or more – more being likely because people tend to go see the group over and over - of the group’s concerts, massive crowds of people are on their feet quickly to join in, knowing all the words to his songs.

While the novice may frown and ask the usual question, there is no doubt this group is well entrenched in musical hearts for life.  It is in his voice, the rich and smooth vocals, the energy on stage and off, and the power of the presence.  Even beyond that, people speak of him as if he is family, citing his lyrics and vocals as timeless, his interaction so very personal as to reach in and raise one up into a needed light with an earnestness, passion, rawness and funk, honesty, sincerity, pride, and life understanding in his delivery.  Those are other peoples’ words but I’ll also throw in “respect,” which he shows in abundance for his audience.  He’s just spiritual, an ardent fan says, and if he were a preacher everyone would show up in church on the regular.

Although not one of those stratospheric superstar names, or someone you see on the Grammy list or repeatedly on the airwaves and at all-star events, the hard work out of the limelight over the years has paid off.  It has been said that his early influences were Frankie Lymon and Sam Cooke, and one of his earliest major breaks came when Marvin Gaye took him on the road.  He’s been at it for over four decades knocking out hits and albums, and the group is still touring super strong with sold-out sets.  His mega-legion of loyal fans across the world is as legendary as he is and to be envied by anyone of any merit in the game.  If you’re just getting introduced to this essential artist and group, then it is important to take you back to some classic performances before tapping the latest Silky Soul Music tribute to Frankie Beverly which is produced by his son Anthony and not yet available, as of this writing, on DVD..

The “Live in Los Angeles” DVD probably runs neck and neck with the well received “Live in New Orleans” but was chosen primarily for better quality and sound even though the New Orleans concert has more tracks.  Here you’ll get that signature white attire and white cap Frankie is known for in performing on stage and all the major tracks that move you to the core.  Songs also include the classics audience attendees and fans love:  "Joy and Pain," "Too Many Games," "Back in Stride," “We Are One,” “Before I Let You Go,” “I Wanna Thank You,” and “Feel That You’re Feeling.”  Not only does this tried and true old schooled group deliver more than expected, Frankie and Maze do it without all the pyrotechnics, dance troupes, or changing set designs.  This is pure vocal artistry, group performance, energy, with live instruments as was required back in the day – something that must return front and center today if you’re going to call it music.

Get this DVD and add more of Frankie Beverly and Maze to the collection.  Just don’t tell me or anyone else you’re a real collector or connoisseur of soul music until you do.  Amen, and out.
